Animal Logic singer releases latest album, a paean to surviving into adulthood
Well before being plucked from obscurity to front innovative and iconic trio Animal Logic in the late ‘80s through her decades of success since, Deborah Holland has been remarkably prolific with her musical output. More impressive though, is that regardless of genre or era, of setting or surroundings, that output has been consistently inspired and irrefutably captivating – as is the case with her new album, I Made it This Far.
The now dual Canadian-American has had an eager audience for the fruits of her work since she and her Animal Logic bandmates – Police drummer Stewart Copeland and legendary jazz bassist Stanley Clarke – dropped their self-titled debut in 1989 and followed it up with Animal Logic II in 1991. She’s also shared five diverse solo albums, four with Wendy Waldman and Cidny Bullens as folk supergroup The Refugees, and scored a handful of feature films, including the cult classic Circuitry Man.
She has performed on both The Tonight Show and Late Night as well as MTV, VH1, and MuchMusic. Meanwhile, songs from her vast catalogue have been featured in acclaimed series like Keeping Up with the Kardashians, CSI, My Name Is Earl, and dozens of others. The awards, the accolades, the enviable achievements – all have led up to the release of I Made it This Far, a welcome and wide-ranging fusion of folkAmericana, pop, and jazz, that borrows from her past but is firmly anchored in the present.
It was recorded in over a dozen studios with many musicians, some of who have contributed to past albums. The songs reflect mature themes, as well as her trademark humor. The record was produced by Deborah and mixed by Wendy Waldman and Abraham Parker. Those who have heard it are saying it may be Holland’s best work yet.
“Since her ‘escape’ from Animal Logic, Deborah has grown and grown as an artist as her songs go ever deeper into a life lived.”
Stewart Copeland – Drummer and Composer
“Deborah is one of those rare gems who has it all – exceptional songwriting craftsmanship with bold, insightful and honest lyrics, and a voice with a pure gorgeous tone to deliver them. She’s the real deal!”
Shari Ulrich –Multiple Juno and Canadian Folk Music award winning singer-songwriter
“Deborah Holland’s I Made It This Far is a collection of smart, literate, and observational songs that puts a personal lens on the complexities of modern life, and offers valuable perspective on making sense of them. They’re accompanied by beautiful arrangements straddling pop, rock, and folk, occasionally infused with strings, that underpin Holland’s soaring, evocative vocals. A lovely recording of meaningful tunes for grownups in an age of ultra-disposable pop.”
